In 2014, Google acquired an AI company called DeepMind, and one of its project, AlphaGo, beat the European Go champion in 2015. In 2016, Google made its TensorFlow library open source, which made machine learning accessible to the masses. Last year, people were left dumbfounded when Google Duplex made a haircut appointment over the phone.

Although the construction industry is one of the most conservative, its activity has experienced a process of progressive adaptation with the imminent emergence of new technology. Construction work is a manual, physical and technical profession where human labour plays an important role. However, it has been shown that integrating innovative technology has brought an endless amount of advantages for the industry, and it would be impossible not to mention the role that artificial intelligence (AI) plays if we are referring to contributions from the digital era. Using algorithms, artificial intelligence aims to equip machines with the same capabilities as human beings. This may seem like something futuristic that will take years to finally occur, but it is present in our everyday lives.

Artificial Intelligence (AI) enabled Automated Chat and Voice technologies are rapidly being used by organizations to finish time-consuming or monotonous administrative tasks. According to a Forrester survey, roughly "85% of customer interactions within an enterprise will be with software robots in five years' time" and "87% of CEOs are looking to expand their AI workforce". One main reason is that chatbots and Voice Assistance have the potential to minimise business costs for stakeholder engagements by more than $8 billion by 2022 according to Juniper Research. The other benifit of chat and voice technologies are their portability as they can be used over text and messaging apps, email, Smart Speakers, and through your company's website and Mobile App. To give more insight on how recent technological developments are transforming HR industry.

One in six Americans now own a smart speaker, according to new research out this week from NPR and Edison Research – a figure that's up 128 percent from January, 2017. Amazon's Echo speakers are still in the lead, the report says, as 11 percent now own an Amazon Alexa device compared with 4 percent who own a Google Home product. Today, 16 percent of Americans own a smart speaker, or around 39 million people. The holiday shopping season also seemed to have played a role in the increased adoption of smart devices in the U.S., with 7 percent of Americans reporting they acquired at least one smart speaker between Black Friday and the end of December, and 4 percent saying they acquired their first smart speaker during the holidays. Both Amazon and Google used the holiday shopping season to their advantage in terms of acquiring market share for their respective devices by slashing prices to encourage more impulse buys, and by heavily promoting the items across their storefronts.

Last week I attended a talk given by Bryan Mistele, president of Seattle-based INRIX. Bryan's talk provided a glimpse into the future of transportation, centering around four principle attributes, often abbreviated as ACES: Autonomous – Cars and trucks are gaining the ability to scan and to make sense of their environments and to navigate without human input. Connected – Vehicles of all types have the ability to take advantage of bidirectional connections (either full-time or intermittent) to other cars and to cloud-based resources. They can upload road and performance data, communicate with each other to run in packs, and take advantage of traffic and weather data. Electric – Continued development of battery and motor technology, will make electrics vehicles more convenient, cost-effective, and environmentally friendly.

While voice assistant systems didn't come online as early as many anticipated, there are a number of options, both widely used and in development, and it's time for businesses to determine is voice assistance is right for their office. While these programs are constantly evolving, they already offer broad capabilities, making it easier to schedule activities, set reminders, and find answers to questions. Microsoft's Cortana is fast making inroads as well, especially since it made its way to PCs, and Amazon's Alexa has outdone expectations for providing home-based voice assistance. While these programs make voice assistance popular among consumers, they haven't made much progress in an office setting. Voice assistance programs are great for organizing your personal life, and they can certainly help for scheduling work-related activities.

The real magic happens in the voice assistants that sit in the cloud and do the heavy lifting on behalf of these devices. You can expect that, in the future, most of the devices you own will have voice assistance built into them.
